Your internet presence, whether that be social media, blogs, photos, videos, podcasts, etc., should be an ever-flowing stream of creative content. But at Ortho Marketing, we see orthodontist after orthodontist come in with a lot of the same issues. These common problems usually have to do with taking on the task of producing large amounts of content with little experience doing so. So, we’ve compiled a list of the top 4 issues that might be holding your content marketing back. Take a look:

1. Not hosting content on your main site

We know that from a developmental standpoint, uploading content to an external site is just easier and faster. But from a content marketing perspective, this is a big no-no. The more you end up competing with your own website, instead of sending searchers and potential patients directly to your main website. It may seem like there’s no harm in competing with yourself, but it results in two major problems:

  • Your practice loses authority by diverting content to a different website
  • You end up dividing your web traffic in half, which can hurt your rank on Google (bad for SEO)

Invest the time and money to get content on your main website, and drive new patient leads all to one place.

2. Lots of pages with little content

Google scores your pages on how much unique, original content they contain. So, instead of spending time posting ten pages with one paragraph each, invest that time into two pages with five paragraphs each and some fun photos. These two pages will attract much more search engine attention and will demonstrate more authority than any of those pages with thin content marketing value.

3. Too much keyword overlap

We know that this seems inevitable in niche industries like orthodontia, but that’s not entirely true. The issue is that your website might have ten pages with vague keywords like “Invisalign” or “Braces”, and all ten of those pages compete with each other. The result is that, instead of one of those pages ranking on page one, they all end up on page 3, where no one will find them. Conduct some research, strategize your content marketing priorities, and incorporate some keyword variation that will make each page individually rank for its own keyword.

4. Slow load times

This is another thing Google takes into consideration, and it has a tendency to result in high bounce rates. If your page takes forever to load, no one will hang around to see what’s on it. Often, slow load time is as a result of high-pixel photos or dense videos on your website, all of which can be dropped down for the same quality. If this isn’t the case, then odds are you need a website upgrade. The investment of updating your website is absolutely worth it to provide a great user experience for your patients.

Don’t know where to begin?

If any of the above scenarios sound like you, you’re probably hindering the potential of your web content. If you’re not sure how to proceed, the pros at Ortho Marketing are ready to work. One of the most important aspects of marketing is being able to showcase what sets your practice apart from the rest. What will motivate someone to travel 30 minutes to your practice instead of 10 minutes to a more local practice? Although it may not seem like it, your orthodontic technology can distinguish your practice as a cut above the rest. Our team at Ortho Marketing has come up with a couple steps to market your practice apart from the others. Take a look:

Step 1: Acquire the latest technology in orthodontia

Although it may seem like no one except orthodontists will understand the difference between how braces work and how Invisalign Teen works, it absolutely matters. Parents getting treatment for their kids and adults getting their own treatment want to know they are being provided the highest, most efficient quality of orthodontic treatment. You’d be surprised at how much adults, especially parents, are willing to invest to ensure they receive the best. So, invest in the latest orthodontic technology, like:

  • iTero scanners/Invisalign technology
  • varying forms or clear braces and self-ligating braces
  • 3D cone beam imaging
  • Custom Smile Design
  • TruDenta

Parents and adults are willing to invest in high quality treatment. Your practice should invest in providing it for them.

Step 2: Frequently update your content

Now that you have all the latest ortho tech, it’s time to let the world know! Take the time to update all your web content with this great news. That means your website, social media, email marketing campaigns, announcements, etc. should be packed with information about your technology. Some ideas to keep potential patients in the loop include:

  • Creating a page on your website to list and explain your practice’s orthodontic technology
  • Announcing on social media each time your practice acquires a new form of ortho tech
  • Design an email announcement to your patients about the new technology

These are only a few ways to use orthodontic technology to market your practice. Keep testing out new ideas!

Referrals are one of the many crucial veins that pumps the heart of any orthodontic practice. Striking a positive rapport about referrals at the right time, in the right mood, is integral to maintaining a positive relationship with your patients. Yes, it’s an excellent way to gain new patients, but if approached incorrectly, or at the wrong time, you may risk losing not only a new patient, but a current one, as well. So, when is the best time to ask a patient to refer you? Our team at Ortho Marketing has come up with some guidelines to assist this delicate process.

DO NOT ask when:

  • There have been complications with the treatment: What might have started as a simple braces treatment sometimes ends up being a bit more complicated than you originally thought. If you’ve just discovered the extra complexity of the case, this is not the best time to ask for a referral. If the patient or parents are still uneasy about the potential outcome, they won’t trust you enough yet to feel comfortable referring you. Wait it out until you’ve earned their confidence.
  • A patient is having a rough time: Through no fault of your own, often child patients have a tough time with orthodontic treatments like braces, especially if it’s a harder case. Even if the treatment is going as planned, children can be very sensitive to the unfamiliarity of braces. If you are struggling to assuage the child’s discomfort, the parents won’t be ready to refer you yet. Once any discomfort has been taken care of, which may not be until the end of treatment, then you can feel more confident asking for a referral.

DO ask when:

  • You’ve made a connection with a patient or parent: Perhaps treatment got off to a great start and your rapport is going great. Or maybe you happened to crack a joke or tell a story that resonated with your patient or the parent. Maybe a child you’re treating with braces came in crying but is leaving smiling! These are all great moments to take advantage of; ask for a referral before the moment passes.
  • A successful, smooth treatment has been completed: This is most likely the best time to ask for referrals. Now that the patient’s treatment is complete, the patient or parent fully trusts your ability to provide superb orthodontic care, and they’re ready to spread the word. Give them the encouragement they need to do so by asking directly for a referral after a successful treatment.

Pro Tip: Train your staff to ask for referrals, as well. Your staff are generally the first and last to see your patients, so it’s great practice to have the last encouragement they hear to refer your service on to someone else.
