Hashtag holidays are an integral part of the digital landscape. Many small businesses are hesitant to participate because they aren’t sure that it’s worth their time or energy, but believe us: it is! If used correctly, the benefits of participating in a social media or hashtag holiday are boundless. Here are a few of the reasons why your company should be actively taking part!

Visibility & Brand Awareness

As with any trending hashtag or topic on social media, participating will exponentially increases your opportunity to reach people. This includes current followers, customers, and prospective leads.

This also creates an opportunity to collaborate with other companies or organizations. For instance, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer research foundations and nonprofits are partnering with businesses in order to optimize impact and reach. Social media for social good. Many of these campaigns are taking advantage of the hashtag #PInktober to expand their reach and solicit online donations.

Engagement

People are using social media to reach out to brands. Take the opportunity to respond and interact with current and potential customers! Create a campaign that encourages participation. For instance, ask people to post a photo, tagging your company and using the trending holiday hashtag!

Conversion

Create a sale or promotion using the holiday hashtag and encouraging engagement! Whatever your call-to-action is, take the opportunity of prospects paying attention to make the ask.

Things to Consider

Is this holiday relevant to our brand and message?

According to Sprout Social, 41% of people will unfollow a business that posts things that are irrelevant. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need to participate in everything. Make sure that your brand meshes with the holiday.

What is this holiday, exactly?

Don’t attempt to participate in a holiday that you may not know the origins of or what exactly it means. There are so many holidays to choose from that it doesn’t do you any favors to create a campaign that will leave people scratching their heads, or worse yet, offended.

Check your dates!

Don’t assume that the holiday is the same date, each year. This can leave you with egg on your face. Make sure to see when the day falls, in addition to the date, so as to avoid confusion and embarrassment.

Remember to be smart and discerning in choosing social media and hashtag holidays to participate in. And of course, have fun!

Instagram is quickly becoming the most influential social media platform. There are currently over 300 million active users registered to the photo sharing app, including celebrities, businesses, and politicians. If mastered, Instagram in 2017 can prove to be a powerful tool in your marketing arsenal, but where do you begin?

#LetsGetStarted: Instagram Basics

CREATE AN ACCOUNT

Creating an account is relatively easy. Begin by downloading the app on your smart phone or visiting via desktop. Next, click ‘Sign Up’, register, and choose a username. For example, @_orthomarketing is the username we have chosen to represent Ortho Marketing.
*Note that after creating a username, your official Instagram URL will be instagram.com/username (ex: https://www.instagram.com/_orthomarketing/).

Create an ‘About’ section in your profile, describing who you are, what you do, and linking to your website! It’s time to start exploring and following!

THE TABS

Let’s get familiar with the tabs bar! Along the bottom of the screen, you will see five icons. From left to right, they represent:

  1. Home – This is where the images of the accounts you follow will appear. This is similar to the Facebook “feed”.
  2. Search/Discover – Here you will search for accounts you are interested in or hashtags. Use @username to search for specific accounts and #keyword to search trending hashtags.
  3. Add Photo – Here is where you will add photos to your account. The app is linked directly to your gallery or you can take a photo directly from the app’s camera.
  4. Likes & Follows – Click here to see who has recently liked your posts, commented, or followed your account.
  5. Profile – This is your personal profile that houses your account information (as seen by your followers) and all of your posts by date, descending from most recent.

IMPORTANT TERMS

Instagram should come with its own dictionary. There are many terms that are used to communicate actions being taken on the app. Here are your need-to-know terms with explanations:

  • Hashtag – Arguably the most important Instagram term, this is a keyword that becomes a searchable, live link. For instance, in one of our most recent posts, we used #dog to describe a post featuring one of our team member’s dog on behalf of #NationalDogWeek. You can click this hashtag to find other photos using the keyword #dog or you can visit the Discover tab and type #NationalDogWeek directly into the search bar to reap the same results.

  • Direct Message (DM) – This is a post or text message that is sent directly to a user or account. This allows users to communicate privately.
  • Photo Mapping – When making a post, you are given the option to add to your photo map using your location. This allows your followers to see where you have posted from, geographically.
  • Tagging – When posting, mentioning another username in the description will create a live link directly to their account. The other account will be alerted that they have been included in your post and allows your followers to easily access the other account, as well. (This can also be done in the comments.)

Instagram offers businesses countless marketing opportunities. As the number of users increases, the app’s functionality evolves in the form of updates. Users are savvy enough to take advantage of these updates, creating trends that can be applied to your business’s marketing strategy.The addition of Instagram stories has allowed entrepreneurs and business owners to expand their brand’s visibility in incredibly creative and effective ways! It operates in the same way as Snapchat and appeals to 2017 as the year of the video. Here are Instagram trends you should be taking advantage of in 2017!

  • Tap to Skip Function – Instagram stories move from panel to panel with a finger tap to the screen. This has been taken advantage of by numerous influencers and brands who have created stories using a single image with additional information as the taps move through the story, ending in a call to action.
  • “New Post”– Use your Instagram stories to introduce a new photo post to your account!
  • Instagram Polls – This brand new feature lets you poll your followers, which can be a great asset to businesses who are looking to engage.
  • Stories on Desktop – Chrome has an extension available that will allow you to view Instagram stories on a desktop or mobile web browser. This allows you to reach a larger number of people who do not have access to Instagram on their smart phone.
    *Note: According to AdEspresso by Hootsuite, Instagram will not be enabling uploads from desktops, in the future.
  • Slider – The Instagram slider feature allows you to post multiple pictures to one post. This is a great way of creating a time line in photos, rather than spamming your followers with countless photos from one event or campaign!

You probably already know that social media gives your practice more exposure than ever before, and how you put it to use is the important part. Since the rise in use of social media is practically undeniable, marketing your practice on Facebook is key to increasing awareness of your business and services. Creating a Facebook ad allows you to advertise to certain users based on their activity on and off Facebook, demographic information, device use information, location, and advertising and marketing partner-supplied information. Meaning users that are likely to be interested in your services are more likely to see your ad and act upon it.

Though there are many good reasons to advertise on the Facebook platform, perhaps Facebook Ads newest feature is the best reason of all. A recent update to Facebook created a tab on everyone’s Facebook menu called “Recent Ad Activity.” It allows users to see any ads they clicked, liked, commented and shared in the last three months. This feature also allows users to save ads, making it that much easier for your product to be accessed by the user at any given time. To view this option, simply click the menu on Facebook then “Recent Ad Activity” and a list will be shown of ads that you have interacted with.

What This Means for You

Facebook has always tracked ad activity but now, we are able to look at ad “revisits.” Someone that has looked at your ad two to three times is likely a stronger prospect. (Source)

Before, if the user wanted to go back and find an ad they saw on Facebook; the chances of finding it again were slim. They would then have to turn to Google to search for the services you provide- paired with even more results that likely aren’t yours. Not to mention, it attributes your web traffic to Google and not to Facebook. Why is this bad? Because if the data shows you are receiving the most business from Google when you are actually being found on Facebook, you could be spending dollars advertising on the wrong platform!
